Advocacy Day

Advocacy Day gives LPP students the opportunity to meet with members of their government in Albany, NY, and discuss key issues like public education funding and equity. The students are selected based on leadership, academic achievements, and community involvement.  This immersive experience not only provides a deeper understanding of government and advocacy but also inspires students to become active voices for change in their communities.

At the 2025 Advocacy Day the students toured the NYS Capitol Building, where they explored the Hall of Governors, the famous Red Room, and the Senate Chambers Gallery.  They witnessed debates, voting sessions, and the passing of bills, amendments, and resolutions. They also observed rallies, learned about the role of the press in shaping policy, and gained a deeper understanding of the First Amendment in action.

The students took meetings with Senator Lea Webb, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, and Assemblyman Joe Angelino. They discussed education, advocacy, and issues impacting their communities. These interactions provided a platform for the students to voice their concerns and aspirations, fostering a dialogue that emphasized the significance of youth involvement in legislative processes and community development.

Advocacy Day exemplifies how civic engagement can drive meaningful change by providing students with firsthand experiences that deepen their understanding of governmental processes and the importance of active participation in democracy. Through engaging directly with lawmakers and witnessing the legislative process in action, students are empowered to lead with purpose, equipped with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for issues that matter to them and their communities.
