# Carlos Martinez: Building Character, Finding Purpose, and Giving Back

Like many young people, Carlos Martinez dreamed of playing professional football one day. But, when circumstances changed and he had to reconsider his path, Carlos didn’t give up. He just found a different direction.

During his freshman year at Binghamton High School, he found a new position working as a custodian at Calvin Coolidge Elementary School. He immediately enjoyed the role and the flexibility it gave him to prepare for his future. But it quickly turned into something more than a job.

Today, Carlos sees his role as a mentor, acting as a role model for students and teaching them the importance of hard work. It’s a lesson he believes is essential for success in any professional environment – and it’s also one he learned as a student in Liberty himself.

“My daily responsibilities can be quite hectic,” Carlos said, “but Liberty’s guidance was instrumental in helping me build the character and work ethic required to succeed in this role and beyond.”

Carlos credits the mentorship he received from Liberty Partnerships with helping him develop the determination to keep pursuing his goals, even when his plans changed. Two counselors in particular made a lasting impression: Mr. Nick and Mrs. Autumn. 

“It was Mr. Nick and Mrs. Autumn who always made me feel at home,” Carlos said. “Their warmth and encouragement created a welcoming environment where I felt comfortable growing and learning.”

When Carlos joined the Liberty Partnerships Program in 2022, he was looking for a community based on teamwork and service. Through hands-on support of the Liberty team, Carlos developed the communication skills, leadership mindset, and work ethic that continue to guide him today.

“Liberty has truly helped me achieve my goals in life by always being there for me whenever I need them,” he said.

One of Carlos’s favorite memories from his time with Liberty is the team car wash. For him, the event captured what made the program special: everyone working together toward a common goal. “It perfectly showcased our collective work ethic,” Carlos said.

That spirit of teamwork extended beyond the car wash. Carlos also participated in community service projects, including house painting, where he learned how important communication and collaboration are when working toward a shared goal.

Carlos’s journey hasn’t followed the exact path he originally imagined. But the lessons he gained through Liberty — teamwork, communication, leadership, perseverance, and respect — have given him a foundation he can carry into whatever comes next.

And the support he received continues to matter.

“Their unwavering support continues to be the foundation of my growth, ensuring that I stay focused and motivated as I navigate each new challenge,” he said.
